Hi … I’m Steve Addison.

This blog is a gathering place for my random thoughts, and some of my writings. Don’t expect to find any blinding flashes of wisdom, or deep themes, but do let me know if you find any of it useful. You’ll also find my other blogs listed to the right of this page.

Steve Addison

And here’s my short biography …

King’s College, Cambridge University
Steve studied Engineering at King’s College

British Aerospace
He started his professional career as a project manager working on guided missile systems for British Aerospace in Stevenage.

Whittle Laboratory, Cambridge University
He returned to Cambridge to undertake his PhD studies in gas turbine engineering at the Whittle Laboratory under Professor Howard Hodson. His work focused on the influence of wakes on the boundary layer behaviour of turbines and compressors. You can find copies of some of the papers that he wrote elsewhere in this website. He also spent a short period at Imperial College, London, doing postdoctoral research into aeroelasticity.

Frazer-Nash Consultancy
Steve then joined Frazer-Nash Consultancy where he worked on projects as varied as the design of fans for vacuum cleaners, analysis of aircraft fire suppression systems, the development of a diesel emissions sensor and analysis of power station heat exchanger performance.

Flomerics Ltd.
In 1993, he joined Flomerics (now part of Mentor Graphics) to act as a Project Manager for both software development activities, and consulting projects such as the thermal design of handheld computers, cellular base stations, lighting system controllers and cable television transmission equipment.

Flomerics Inc.
In 1994, Steve moved to the US to run Flomerics’ San Jose office. As well as his management and sales support roles, Steve also developed FLOPACK (the first commercial web-based solution for mechanical engineering), was involved in many research projects and was the company’s marketing director. You can find copies of some of the papers and articles that he wrote during this time elsewhere in this website.

Knowledge Impact
During 2000, Steve worked for Knowledge Impact in the field of e-Learning. He was responsible for running the consulting group developing custom training solutions – including WBT and instructor classes – for organisations rolling out ERP and CRM systems.

Consulting
During 2000, he also worked as a consultant on the custom development of an EDA (Circuit Board Layout) to CFD (Thermal Analysis) integration tool – FLO/EDA – for Flomerics. Deployed both on the Internet and on the intranets of larger clients, it was able to read IDF board layout data and convert it into thermal models for analysis. It also incorporated library functionality to store thermal data for the components.

SecurityPortal
In late 2000, Steve joined SecurityPortal – the largest provider of information security news on the Web – as Director of Product Development to work on commercializing some of their ideas and intellectual property assets. He worked on projects such as online education, web-based benchmarking tools, and security alerting services.

Cosaint
In 2001, Steve co-founded Cosaint to develop web-based security training for end-users. The company, based in Mount Vernon WA, has launched a number of courses including "Defend Yourself Against Viruses", "Good Password Practice", "Safe Surfing", "Secure Use of E-Mail" and "Understanding the HIPAA Privacy Rule."

City University
Steve has also been a member of the Teaching Faculty at City University in Bellevue, WA where he developed and taught courses in the Computer Science Department, and at Henry Cogswell College in Everett, WA where he taught Technical Communications, and Operations Management.
